We spent New Years with a wonderful group of friends that Susan has worked with on the border. It was a mellow evening as the group was taking care of a friend that had a terrible motorbike accident the day before. Luckily, despite some intense cuts and scraps, she will be ok.
Fireworks and traditional Thai lanterns (similar to Chinese paper lanterns) helped accentuate the celebration. Having never seen paper lanterns released in mass, Josh really loved seeing them (even though he was asleep from 10:30pm to 11:58pm before New Year's).
Josh on the lanterns: They do this beautiful and stately march up and across the sky after they are released, with hundreds of small yellow dots lined up in the sky following the wind patterns. Makes me want to come back for the annual lantern festival (Loi Krathong), which supposedly dwarfs the number released at New Year's.
