The boy who cried dung beetle - Kruger game park

So, it turns out that Susan has absolutely no tracking skills in the bush. The only thing on safari that she managed to identify (unless it was pointed out to her at two feet away) was a tree stump, which she firmly asserted was a cheetah until it remained immobile for a half hour.

Josh, on the other hand, seems to have an innate talent for tracking *some* species of wildlife -- most notably large ants, worms, and dung beetles. He pointed these out ad nauseum while Susan was trying (unsuccessfully) to spot elephants and lions.

Our last three days staying near Kruger national park have been great fun, thanks to super friendly and accommodating tour guides Jan and Juanita from Tambo Tours.

Highlights: we visited several waterfalls in the Blyde River Canyon, tracked rhino on foot, and went on a spectacular night safari, complete with a velvet black sky, perfect weather, and spottings of 20 different animals - including a chilling close-up of a leopard.

Our rangers Andre and Celeste were remarkable. With their plain eyes they spotted things we couldn't see with binoculars. In one particularly hilarious and embarrassing episode, the rangers pointed out a nightjar (a type of bird) in a tree from about fifty feet away, in the dark. We drove right up under it, and they pointed their flashlights on it, and still we couldn't locate the thing.

We would last about a half hour in the bush, if that, without assistance.
